First Debate for NYC Public Advocate

February 11th, 2019

The 10 candidates for New York City Public Advocate, vacated by Attorney General Tish James and once held by current Mayor de Blasio, met this week for the first scheduled debate. Among the frontrunners for the position are recent candidate for Lt. Governor Jumaane Williams, Assemblyman Michael Blake, and former City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito. Most of the candidates attacked Jumaane Williams for past comments that suggested he was not supportive of abortion or marriage equality, all of the candidates attacked the Amazon headquarters deal, the Mayor’s handling of NYCHA, as well as expressing frustration with the subway system which was characterized as failing.
