New York State General Election Results
November 13th, 2018
Democrats had a good day in New York this Election Day, having swept all of the statewide offices, gaining control of the State Senate for the first time in a decade and winning three Congressional seats to help the Democrat retake control of the House of Representatives.
Governor Andrew Cuomo easily won a third term over Republican Marc Molinaro, while Democratic State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli and Democratic U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand were also overwhelmingly re-elected to their respective offices. And Democrat Letitia “Tish” James beat Republican Keith Wofford in the state Attorney General’s race. (James announced last week that current Attorney General Barbara Underwood will return to her position as state Solicitor General, a job that she held from 2007 until the Legislature elected her to replace Eric Schneiderman, who resigned.
In the State Senate, Democrats needed a net gain of just one seat to gain control. They did much better, and look to have gained a total of eight seats. This means that come January, Democrats will have complete control in Albany, which is expected to have significant impacts in terms of state policymaking.
We need our leaders in Albany to consider the significant challenges facing the Upstate New York economy. We look forward to working with Governor Cuomo, incoming Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie to find pro-growth solutions that will strengthen communities throughout the state.
