As Legislature Returns, Unshackle Upstate Calls on Officials to Support New York’s Economic Recovery
May 22nd, 2020
Statement from Michael Kracker, Executive Director of Unshackle Upstate
“As the Legislature reconvenes to address COVID-19 related issues, we strongly urge members of the Senate and Assembly to recognize the significant economic impact of this crisis. Individuals and businesses are facing significant financial challenges that highlight the critical need to restart New York’s economy as soon as possible.
In a memo sent to legislators today, our organization identified several measures – some of which should be supported and others that should be rejected.
With more than 1.8 million New Yorkers filing for unemployment and tens of thousands of businesses receiving federal support, this crisis has devastated the New York economy. While the state and federal government have provided some temporary relief, more businesses continue to announce permanent closure and more families worry about their financial future.
Now is the time for our leaders in Albany to lead us out of this fiscal crisis. We urge the legislature to enact policies that will help expedite our economic recovery and reject legislation that will make it more difficult for businesses to succeed. Struggling Upstate communities are counting on Albany to step up and take action.”
