House Oversight Committee Investigates NYS Department of Labor on UI Fraud
January 25th, 2023
As reported by Spectrum’s Susan Arbetter, a letter was sent to the New York State Department of Labor on Friday, January 13 asking for all information relating to fraud in the state’s unemployment insurance (UI).
Small businesses have been shouldering the burden of New York’s massive UI debt for too long, and without any state assistance. The request for data and investigation by the House Oversight Committee comes following months of advocacy by Upstate United, including our calls for public hearings at the state level.
The request also followed Commissioner Reardon’s declaration that the agency’s estimate of unemployment insurance lost to fraud was $4 billion, significantly lower than the $11 billion estimate released in November by the Office of the State Comptroller.
