Upstate United: Gov. Hochul Must Veto the Climate Change Superfund Act

December 9th, 2024

The following statement can be attributed to Justin Wilcox, Executive Director of Upstate United

“The irony of Governor Hochul cautioning residents ahead of winter storm warnings while also contemplating amendments to retroactively penalize the very companies that keep homes warm during the coldest months should not be lost on Upstate residents. Regardless of the resounding pleas by environmental activists and bill sponsors, the Climate Change Superfund Act is untenable to enforce and irresponsible to every New Yorker who depends on natural gas, propane, and home heating oil.

“Advancing the Climate Change Superfund Act into law would be short-sighted and just another example of New York State moving too quickly on ineffective measures that lead to more harm than good for residents. Strong-arming this measure across the finish line will no doubt lead to costly legal challenges and will not help achieve the overall goal of improving the climate. Instead, state leaders should focus on improving the flaws of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act before we fall further behind the timeline than we already are.”
