Upstate United Responds to Status of NYS Climate Superfund Act

The following statement is attributed to Justin Wilcox, Executive Director of Upstate United, in response to reporting done by the Syracuse Post-Standard.

“New Yorkers need affordable, reliable energy and investment in our aging electric grid, not legally dubious policies that will increase costs without meaningfully reducing global greenhouse gas emissions.

“The arguments presented in court underscore the serious legal questions surrounding the Climate Change Superfund Act. Rather than addressing emissions where they occur, the law attempts to impose billions of dollars in retroactive liability on a handful of companies while doing nothing to hold the world’s largest emitters, including China, accountable.

“Albany should stop defending a legally questionable law that will ultimately make energy more expensive for New Yorkers and instead focus on strengthening our electric grid, improving affordability, and making the Empire State more competitive.”
