New York Leaders Must Advance Stable Policy During Time of Uncertainty

April 23rd, 2025

The following statement can be attributed to Justin Wilcox, Executive Director of Upstate United

“While many policymakers and advocates are holding out hope that the Heat Act will be part of the final budget discussions, we urge New York State leaders to take note that Governors of other states, like Connecticut, Maryland and Pennsylvania, are simultaneously speaking out publicly about expanding access to natural gas and building more natural gas power plants.

“In New York State, we have a Janus-faced energy policy. On one hand, legislators discuss restricting the use of natural gas, on the other, the state continues to provide massive amounts of natural gas for large economic development projects. State leaders should stop sending mixed signals about New York State’s intention to ban natural gas. The public and businesses looking to invest in New York need clear, unambiguous policies, not makeshift policies that allow the state to pick winners and losers and dictate who gets access to affordable and reliable energy.

“Now more than ever, it is critical that New York state leaders provide stable, steady, predictable policies. The last thing we need as residents and business owners is more uncertainty.”
