STATEMENT FROM UPSTATE UNITED FOLLOWING THE RELEASE OF THE SENATE AND ASSEMBLY ONE-HOUSE BUDGETS
March 13th, 2024
Statement attributed to Justin Wilcox Executive Director of Upstate United
“We are beyond disappointed that both the Senate and Assembly’s One-House Budget proposals included measures to raise income taxes, a complete disregard of Comptroller DiNapoli’s warnings back in December. Fortunately, Governor Hochul has signaled that raising income taxes is a non-starter for her and we implore her to hold her ground.
“When it comes to crafting this year’s spending plan, those at the negotiation table have several significant factors to consider. New York State’s combined local and state tax burden is the highest in the nation, state and localities combined collected up to 136% more in corporate income taxes per $1,000 as compared to other states[1] and we rank 2nd worst in the business tax climate index[2]. Not to mention the state is dealing with an unprecedented three-year population decline of over half a million residents.
“Now more than ever it is time for Albany leaders to find common ground on our state’s affordability crisis. Otherwise, we fear it will be too late.”
