Statement from Upstate United Regarding New York’s Nation-Leading Population Decline
December 22nd, 2022
The following statement is attributable to Justin Wilcox, executive director of Upstate United
“New data published by the U.S. Census Bureau found that New York State experienced a population decline of 180,341 from July 1, 2021 through July 1, 2022. This loss was the largest in the nation during that time. Over the last two years, New York’s population has declined by approximately 500,000. The continuation of the Empire State Exodus is a crisis that demands immediate attention and action. This troubling trend will continue until Governor Hochul and legislative leaders enact meaningful tax relief and pro-growth reforms. We need to get our economy moving – not our people.”
