Unshackle Upstate and NFIB of NY Push for Regulatory Reforms
March 26th, 2018
ALBANY, NY – Two of the state’s leading pro-business organizations called on the Assembly and Governor Cuomo to include a package of regulatory reforms as part of the State budget.
The groups stated that enacting the reforms – which were already approved by the Senate – would provide businesses, non-profits and local governments with opportunities to actively participate in the regulatory process. The viewpoints of those stakeholders are often overlooked or discounted during the State’s rulemaking procedures.
“Far too often, New York’s employers and local leaders are treated as an afterthought. In reality, their insights and input would help make many regulations fairer for everyone involved,” said Greg Biryla, executive director of Unshackle Upstate. “Enacting the Senate’s commonsense reforms would maintain accountability and transparency in the regulatory process and provide some much needed regulatory relief.”
Additionally, the organizations believe that the reforms will help soften New York’s harsh business climate – often cited as the worst in the nation. Considering the tremendous fiscal challenges facing the State and local governments, Governor Cuomo and leaders in the Assembly are being encouraged to help businesses thrive.
“New York’s regulatory process lacks transparency which unfortunately puts small businesses immediately out of compliance and subject to State scrutiny and financial penalties,” said Mike Durant, state director of NFIB. “Enacting sensible reforms to New York’s regulatory process by promoting guidance and support for small business from the State in addition to increased public access to participate in the process is essential. We strongly urge that the Senate’s regulatory reform package to be at the forefront of budget negotiations this week and a component of any final budget agreement.”
