Unshackle Upstate Joins Multi-State Coalition Letter in Opposition to the Transportation Climate Initiative
December 17th, 2019
BUFFALO, NY – Today, Unshackle Upstate released a letter to Governor Cuomo and the New York State Legislature in opposition to the proposed Transportation Climate Initiative (TCI). The TCI is a regional collaboration of 12 Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states and the District of Columbia considering participation in a “cap and invest” program. The goal of the initiative is to reduce CO2 emissions from fossil motor fuel use. This proposal would artificially raise the cost of gasoline and diesel over time hoping to achieve a change in consumer behavior away from standard automotive fuels.
“With many regions of the state struggling economically, leaders in Albany should be finding ways to make New York more affordable. The proposed Transportation Climate Initiative would result in significantly higher fuel costs that would hit the wallets of hardworking families and businesses,” said Michael Kracker, executive director at Unshackle Upstate. “Upstate New Yorkers, particularly those in rural and remote communities, rely heavily on vehicle transportation to live their daily lives. Imposing what amounts to a new gas tax would impact millions of New Yorkers who are already being nickel-and-dimed by state government.”
As more details about the TCI are provided, Unshackle Upstate will be working alongside various groups in the 12-state region and here in New York to raise awareness and encourage the public to voice their concerns. Additional details on the TCI are expected to be released soon with a public comment period to follow.
