Upstate United Responds to The New York ISO 2025 Power Trends

June 2nd, 2025

The following statement can be attributed to Justin Wilcox, Executive Director of Upstate United

“Today the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) released its annual Power Trends report, which once again points to the importance of maintaining grid reliability during a time of rapid transition. Public policies are driving more fossil generation into retirement to meet decarbonization goals and tighter emissions restrictions while new carbon-free resources aren’t being added to the grid fast enough to keep pace with expected demand growth.

“On top of the retirement of fossil generation outpacing the needed replacements, the infrastructure supporting traditional fossil-fueled generation is aging significantly, another risk to shrinking reliability margins. As these margins narrow, consumers face greater risks of outages, particularly as policy mandates coming out of Albany force more reliable resources out of service. The bottom line is if New Yorkers want to keep their lights on, we are going to continue to need fossil-fuel generation, at least until additional resources can be put online to supply consistent, reliable power.”
